In 1964, Mineko Yatabe (Kasumi Arimura) was born and then raised at a mountain village in the northwest of Ibaraki Prefecture. She has 7 family members. Her older brother is smart and he is the first person from their village to an university. Her father goes to Tokyo to earn tuition fees for her older brother. Mineko thinks if she graduates from high school, she wants to help her grandfather and mother with farming. Mineko Yatabe's life changes after her father fails to come back.
The story is based on the life of fashion designer Koshino Ayako, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 92. Although she was a successful designer in Japan, she also single-handedly raised three daughters who followed in her footsteps to become internationally known designers, named Hiroko, Junko, and Michiko.
Ono's character in the drama, modeled after Koshino, is named Ohara Itoko. She will play the character from her teenage years to her fifties. The story is set in the Kansai region, but Ono will have no problem with the dialect since she is originally from Nara.
In 1930 and as a young child, Tsuneko Kohashi lives at Enshu in Shizuoka Prefecture. She has a happy life with her parents and two younger sisters. Things change after her father dies from tuberculosis. Her father asked Tsuneko Kohashi to take care of the family in his place. Due to financial difficulties, her mother Kimiko decides to move the family to Tokyo where Tsuneko's grandmother lives.
In Tokyo, Tsuneko eventually graduates from school. She begins to work at small publishing company and learns editing. By 1945, Tsuneko decides to publish a magazine for women with the help of her two younger sisters. Her sisters do not know anything about the publishing world. A man then appears in front of them. The man is Isaji Hanayama.
In the late Tokugawa Shogunate, Asa was born as the second daughter of a wealthy merchant in Kyoto, Japan. Later, in Osaka, Asa entered various business fields like coal mines, banks, life insurance. She also founded the first female university in Japan.
Sumire (Kyoko Yoshine) was born as the second child from a wealthy family. She enjoys embroidery and sewing. Whatever Sumire decides to do, she must achieve the goal no matter what.
During World War II, Sumire gets married and becomes pregnant, but her husband is sent off to war. She gives birth to her first daughter. Right before the end of war, the city of Kobe is attacked. Due to the attack, Sumire loses property. While waiting for her husband to return, she begins to make children’s clothes.
